My beloved dog of nearly ten years died on December 4, 2010. He likely had cancer and was battling a fever for too long. I couldn't stand to watch him suffer any longer so I had him put down. What an awful experience.

Gandalf was my companion for the decade; he brought me so much joy and comfort. Lord knows he could misbehave, and his battles with other dogs is legendary, but Gandalf was wonderful with people and good to me. I've had many dogs, but they were all temporary friends, destined to be adopted. He will always be my "first" dog, the one I kept.

He always let me dress him up:

He loved to play with this ballast stone from West 12th Street. I never did weigh it, but it is at least twice as clunky and heavy as a normal brick. Up and down West 4th he would push it with his nose and drag it with his paws. We always got a crowd. What a character!

A Whale Story

If you read a recent front page story of the San Francisco
Chronicle, you would have read about a female humpback whale who had
become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was
weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to
struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope
wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her
mouth. A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallon Islands
(outside the Golden Gate) and radioed an environmental group for
help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined
that she was so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and
untangle her. They worked for hours with curved knives and
eventually freed her. When she was free, the divers say she swam in
what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and
every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently
around as she was thanking them. Some said it was the most
incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. The guy who cut the
rope out of her mouth said her eyes were following him the whole
time, and he will never be the same. May you, and all those you
love, be so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by people who
will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you.
And, may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude.
I pass this on to you, my friends, in the same spirit.

I rescued a darling dog from the pound in Asheville, North Carolina. I tried to pursuade the owner to give him to me and not the pound, but he refused. His name was Tye, and he ate the farmer's chickens. I had to come back to the pound the next day and adopt the pup that would later be named Obidiah. Obi lived with my friend Lauren for many years. He passed away yesterday.

This is Lauren's letter to me:
I wanted to let you know that Obi passed on very peacefully this afternoon, at home, with Veronika and I. We can't thank you enough for bringing him into our lives. He was an amazing puppy, companion, and member of our family and his loss is deeply felt.
I hope that you might spend a moment thinking about some memory of him tonight. I am sure he is out chasing rabbits and frolicking merrily! He was always happy and loving throughout his entire life. Thank you so much.

This last picture is the day I brought Obi home. He still wasn't full grown. He was a malimut (sp) and a damn sweet dog. His favorite toy at was a large box of nails.

Check out these great ideas for shelving. I really like the idea of having a wall of windows that are also multi-functional.

This house is a great example of how you CAN mix modern design with old RECYCLED materials and still create a lively, yet rustic home. I love the old water tower as a pool, and that it is almost an infinity pool.

The gay in me just LOVES interior design and gardening. These floating gardens on discarded barges are amazing. I love the private floating oasis idea. If I had a lake or pond on my property, I think this would be great idea.

I had a weekly radio show at Warren Wilson College. At that time the school had about 600 students, so the likelihood of anyone tuning in for my little hour was pretty small. Christy however, always tuned in. I dedicated a Tom Petty song to her, "Wildflowers." She was so flattered, she never forgot it, and so I call her Wildflower.

This is Christy, so sweet, humble, and full of energy. From across any room you can spot her, not only because she is the one standing under the bar stool, but because her energy brightens the room; she's always the one that is smiling.

Road trips are made easier with Christy by your side. She can tell any story for any trip, and time it so well, that from beginning to end, including pit stops, the end of her story hits when you reach your destination. A four hour trip to Atlanta is made much easier with a good story teller. Now Christy IS a talker, and I must admit, there are times that I just have to tune her out. Instead, I count how many times she uses the word "like" in a sentence. The numbers are staggering.

I wonder if anyone remembers her VW bus, Petunia I think she named it. If I ever needed an adrenaline kick, I would just hitch a ride with Christy. She drove that thing like a race car, then looked to all of us in bewilderment when the engine fell out.

Christy's love for life extends to the animal world as well. One year in her VERY CLUTTERED dorm room, she had a hamster and two supposedly female rabbits, Daisy and Velvet. Well, Velvet would leap from her cage every opportunity she got and would hide under the couch. One day while Nora and Christy were cleaning house, they decided to lift up the couch only to discover that Velvet had babies under there. GO DAISY!

This is Christy, inimitable, lovable Christy. This past October, I had the good fortune to spend a long weekend with Christy. Even though many years had passed since we had last seen each other, it felt more like just a summer had passed. Nothing had changed, and it felt so good to be in her company. Well, some things had changed. She dropped a lot of weight and gave it to me. And her two children were the light of her life. She had a picture of them on her key chain, and showed it to everybody.

Goodbye Christy, you truly belong among the wildflowers. You are loved, and you are missed.
